To make mimosas with our Sunday morning breakfast, we popped open a bottle of JCB No. 21 Brut, an inexpensive French sparkling wine which is not from the Champagne region, so it cannot carry the name (or the price) of “Champagne.” It is actually from the nearby appellation Crémant de Bourgogne A.C. We didn’t know anything about this brand, so I looked it up and found that JCB are the initials of Jean-Charles Boisset, President of Boisset Family Estates, a huge family owned wine business in Burgundy, with a collection of over 20 wineries in France, California, Canada and Italy. Our bottle of JCB No. 21 Brut is part of Jean-Charles’ personal brand of limited edition numbered old and new world wines, apparently designed to appeal to collectors. According to Boisset, the JCB No. 21 Brut is Radiant – Mysterious – Luminous: “For Jean-Charles Boisset, sparkling wine is not a special occasion beverage. It is a RADIANT moment in your otherwise typical day. While effortless to enjoy, our No. 21 Brut is nonetheless a bit MYSTERIOUS. Crisp and bracing, it also has the tiniest bit of LUMINOUS creaminess.” Anyhow, it tasted great in our Sunday morning mimosas. This sparkler received a score of 90 points from Wine Enthusiast.
